Pie making has always been a tradition in my family. Our recipes were passed down from my great grandmother, to my nana and then to my mom Mamie, who taught me how to make their delicious New England pies. I loved how my mother would take her leftover pieces of homemade crust, brush them with melted butter, then sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar and bake them right along with her pies. This was my reward for a day of pie making.
Whether I’m making our McIntosh apple pie, or our whipped pumpkin pie with molasses and brown sugar, or sweet and tart strawberry rhubarb, I’m always reminded of our family gatherings in New Hampshire.
Two years ago, I made my grandmother's apple pies as a fundraiser for my daughter's high school dance. The response was overwhelming, and I soon knew that I had to bring a little taste of New England to the Bay Area and Mamie’s Pies was launched!
